10 years' jail for five who attacked policeman

KUCHING: In a drunken state, three youths and three men assaulted an off-duty policeman, kicked and punched him and slashed his face with a pen-knife.

The policeman fell into a reservoir and drowned.

Yesterday, five of his assailants -- Mohammed Sahullah Mustapha, 19, Abdul Malik Faisal Kamil, 18, Benson Jeffery, 21, Mohammed Nizam Karim, 22, and Hasrul Saliman, 25, -- were each jailed 10 years by Sessions Court judge Amelati Parnell and ordered to be given two strokes of the rotan.

The court found them guilty of causing grievous hurt to Mazlan Sapawi with a dangerous weapon.

The sixth youth, who was aged 14, was ordered to be sent to the Henry Gurney School in Sabah for rehabilitation for three years because of his age.
The judge had reserved sentencing to yesterday pending a probation report on the juvenile.
